Background

Bioreactor for Clean Coffee Effluents

Implementing Agency:
ASTRA, IISc, Bangalore

Necessity to treat contamination of water sources during the pulping season saw this project bring in upgraded bio-reactors. Stakeholder support enabled production and usage of methane gas for running diesel engines including the pulpers themselves. We have newer initiatives in running transport vehicles on methane gas. Compost as a by-product has been well received and we have the bio-reactor technology now being adopted not only for treating coffee pulp but also for converting the abundant leaf litter profuse in the coffee estates in the non-pulping season.

Objectives

Reduce coffee processing related water pollution of Kaveri and Tungabhadra river systems and consequent threats to drinking water in the down stream areas as well as rendering coffee pulping an environmentally clean operation.
Enable and provide energy/manure/aesthetics/cost reduction and technology variety as incentives to the coffee planter to adopt cleaner production process and discharge safe/clean effluents. The project will enable sustainable operation by creating of a pool of trained manpower and potential employment for them in this region.
