Background

Integrated Development of Hebbal, Madivala and  Doddabommasandra Lakes

Implementing Agency: Forest Department, Bangalore Urban Division

The project was taken up to evolve and address techno solutions to lakes’ restoration. People’s participation and policy influence were essentials. Systematic resolution of tasks varying from de-watering, de-silting, preparing lined sewage diversion canals and improving O2 levels in the sewage mixed water called for a synergic approach bringing in affordable water treatment facilities along with interventions such as wetlands, islands, etc. The public contribution was sought through entrance fees to lakeside parks and entertainment facilities so as to enable recurrent operational costs.

Today we have competition to bid and take over maintenance of these lakes by groups having a vision for commercial exploitation. The Lake Development Authority and the Department of Environment now views future maintenance in an assured manner. What better example can we have of sustaining aquatic and local bio-diversity in urban areas?
