Background

PICO Hydel Projects

The compulsive necessity to evolve a technology to bring power (electric) to the powerless due to distances making reaching power grids to small resident communes triggered this project. Total local stakeholder support welcoming new technologies saw its success.

Objectives
 

bullet Providing realiable electricity to target group in remote hilly areas of Karnataka by:
(a)
Setting up about 10 (6) demonstrations village hydros totaling to a
     generating capacity of about 40kW
(b) Building local capacity to operate, maintain and manage the projects
     including setting up systems for tariff fixation, tariff collection, demand
     management through community participation
bullet Preparing a case for future diffusion of the technology by:
(a) Assessing and documenting the positive environmental impact of the
     demonstration projects
(b) Assessing the economic viability for further diffusion of such projects
     including assessing the ability of target group to pay for electricity/services
(c) Assessing the potential for further diffusion of such projects
(d) Suggesting budgetary, financial and policy support necessary for further
     diffusion of such projects
