Empowerment of Pourakarmikas in Bangalore City

Re-visiting the various stakeholders involved in urban solid waste management and educating the field workers of their rights and responsibilities ensured bringing out a series of IEC material including a short film considering the experiential lessons gathered in the limited area of Basavanagudi ward no. 4 in Bangalore.

Objectives

 
bullet Build the capacities of Solid Waste Workers in one Health Ward of the Bangalore Municipal Corporation towards fulfilling the role proposed for them by the Supreme Court Appointed Committee on India's Urban Solid Waste Management for Class I cities
bullet Mobilize the local community in understanding the implications of the new Solid Waste Management Strategy, and supporting the new role of "Pourakarmikas" as community level Solid Waste Managers
bullet Develop appropriate educational aids in building the capacities of the "Pourakarmikas" and the local community in enabling a sustainable community level solid waste management strategy
bullet Developed appropriate educational aids in building the capacities of “Pourakarmikas” and local community in enabling a sustainable community level SWM strategy
bullet The educational aid include   material like leaf lets, wall hangings, book lets, etc. and video documentary
bullet The production of 150 English copies and 100 Kannada copies of video document is complete
bullet Various schools and colleges were approached to elicit their interest in the initiative a special NSS programme was conducted at Jain College a group of students trained to support Pourakarmikas in disseminating community education material
bullet Mobilize the local community in understanding the implications of the new SWM strategy and supporting the new role of  Pourakarmikas as community level Solid Waste managers
