Integrated Solid Waste Management in Chikkamagalur and Raichur

Implementing Agency: ASTRA, Swaccha Trust, ESG & DMA

The project aimed at putting to a larger volume test, the lessons learnt in prevailing solid waste management approaches in order to prepare a demo model that could be followed. The co-funding of the stakeholder department of municipal administration was upto 70%. The projects were taken up in two cities with distinctly different cultural, climatic and demographic profiles.

Objectives

	Overall training and capacity building of the Solid waste Management Personnel in order to achieve segregation of solid waste at source and consequent management of the segregated waste by environmentally appropriate methodologies including, bio-methanation and safe disposal in landfills.
	Motivating local communities to work with Solid waste Management Personnel, by encouraging a variety of innovative interventions in order to achieve change in civic behaviour for sustaining a sanitary and socially just municipal solid waste management system
	Upgrading the infrastructure capacities of the Municipal Authorities to comprehensively address the overall Solid waste Management needs of the urban areas, taking into account all occupational health needs of the personnel involved
	Development of a management approach that would progressively address the challenges in municipal solid waste management, and serve as a role model for other urban areas

Progress till date

	Landfill sites identified in Chikkamagalur and Raichur
	DMA have finalized equipments to be procured and the process of procurement has began
	Education material firmed up by DMA
	Parallel process on soft components commenced by Swaccha Charitable Trust, at Chikkamagalur and ESG at Raichur
	Design and development of Bio-reactors and disposal facility done by ASTRA
	Progress of all components have began to accelerate
